(Pinot Noir)
Beguiling strawberry, ripe raspberry, bing cherry, meld with forest floor, violets, wild herbs and flint. The palate is silken, laced with tight knit tannins, cradling loganberry and black cherry fruit, with a hint of white pepper and violets leaving a smooth lingering finish. This is a GREAT example of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
This drinks at 2-3 times its price for Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The heart and soul project of Stephane Vivier who also makes Hyde de Villaine wines, partly owned by Auvret de Villaine (DRC).
Husband and wife team Stephané and Dana Vivier bring a Burgundian sensiblity to wines made in California. No angel investors or rich relatives here. In fact the whole enterprise was bankrolled on a single credit card. Winemaker Stephané grew up in Meloisey, Burgundy in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Learning from a 70-year-old winegrower in Pommard, he studied in Dijion at the University and has worked in Switzerland, New Zealand, Napa and Sonoma. Attracted by the less restrictive practices in California he became the winemaker at Hyde de Villaine (HdV), in 2002, which is owned by DRC, and remains in that position. Vivier is his personal project. A self proclaimed “lazy winemaker” he keeps his hands to himself allowing the alchemy of nature to do what it does best. Patience, letting place speak and being gentle with the grapes, guide his “lazy” winemaking philosophies.
